Scientists speak for the most powerful volcano eruption in recorded history

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and university professor have dated the most powerful volcano eruption in recorded history, the Thera/Santorini eruption, to the late 17th Century BC. The Aegean Sea island of Thera, now known as Santorini, erupted with power equal to two million Hiroshima-type atomic bombs, said Drs. Kevin Pang, Santosh Srivastava and Robert Keston, all of JPL, and Hung-hsiang Chou of the University of California at Los Angeles.

The effects of Thera's explosion were felt around the world and the island's destruction was believed to be the source of Plato's story of Atlantis, an island civilization submerged by the sea.

Climatic anomalies were also recorded in the time of King Chieh, the last king of the Xia, the earliest recorded Chinese dynasty. "At the time of King Chieh the sun was dimmed," the records report. "Three suns appeared." "Winter and summer came irregularly."

The volcano with the most unusual activity

During research expeditions, scientists from the University of Rhode Island, while investigating the seafloor around Santorini, they discovered an extensive field of previously unknown hydrothermal vents. The expedition was part of a longer research cruise led by National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Robert Ballard, a URI oceanography professor and president of the Institute for Exploration.

The scientists recorded gases, large quantities of metals and fluids flowing from the vents at temperatures as high as 220 degrees Centigrade! Large amounts of iron bacteria were also found that live in Santorini's volcano area, on the nutrients in the vent fluids. An international project has been in progress, based on this discovery, aiming to create life on Mars. Sending iron bacteria to Mars, will help create appropriate conditions for the survival of humans there, due to bacteria's property to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and release oxygen. The necessary equipment for the project has been provided by NASA.

From fiction to reality

Recent scientific work has established that nine out of ten plagues of Pharaoh, occurred as a consequence of the volcanic activity in Thera.

Dr D. Stanley, found volcanic shards in the Nile Delta, that can be firmly related to the Thera explosion (BBC article, "Evidence - the Exodus").

The ash cloud passing overhead would have completely cut out the sun and plunged the Delta into darkness. This, accompanied by the unusual weather seen after volcanic eruptions (lightening and perhaps hail), would have caused temperatures to drop, which would have reduced rainfall and could have led to a drought. With river levels dropping, the water would have begun to stagnate. Combined with the poisonous minerals that were raining down from the ash cloud, conditions would have been ripe for an outbreak of the plagues.
